The Orishas and the Catholic saints correspondents in Umbanda

In the period of Brazilian colonization, more than four million Africans crossed the Atlantic. From different regions of Africa, they were separated from their fellow nations and divided into slave quarters, to avoid riots.

This resulted in a mixture of people and customs, which were concentrated in different ways in different locations in Brazil as slaves had their own dances, songs, saints and parties.

Gradually they were mixing the Catholic rites present with elements of African cults, and associating their deities with the saints in an attempt to rescue the atmosphere of its past and to circumvent the prohibition to exercise their religion.

The practices of that time just driving the formation of cult religions today, as Candomble and Umbanda, with strong penetration in Bahia, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo and Rio Grande do Sul.

Obaluaiê or Omulu - The Orisha of pests and skin diseases. Known cure for all ills. His colors are white and black. His day is Monday. Its element is earth. It is associated with Saint Lazarus and Saint Roque.

Oxumaré - it is the Orisha of luck, abundance and fertility. Protector of pregnant women. His fields are the wells and fountains of forests. Their colors green and yellow or with the rainbow colors is represented by a serpent. His day is Thursday. Its elements are water and earth. It is associated with St. Bartholomew.

Ewá- is the deity of rain, queen of mysteries and magic. His colors are red and white. Your day is the Sabbath. Its element is water. It is associated with Our Lady of the Snows.

Xango - is the Lord of Justice, Thunder and quarry. His colors are red and white. His day is Thursday. Its elements are air and the earth. It is associated with St. Jerome, St. Anthony, St. Peter, St. John the Baptist, St. Joseph and St. Francis of Assisi.

Oshun - is the queen of rivers and waterfalls, gold and love. His colors are yellow, gold, light blue and pink. It is the second wife of Shango. Your day is the Sabbath. Its element is water. It is associated with Our Lady of Conception, Our Lady Aparecida and Our Lady of Candeias.

Iansã - is the warrior goddess, lady of the winds, storms and lightning. It is the leading women of Xango. His colors are red, yellow, dark brown and white. His day is Wednesday. Its elements are water, air and fire. It is associated with Santa Barbara.

Logun-Edé - His domains are the beds of rivers and seas. He is the son of Oxum with Oxossi. His colors are yellow and blue. His day is Thursday. Its elements are water and earth. It is associated with St. Michael the Archangel and Santo Expedito.

Oba - Your domains are troubled waters. It is one of Xango's wives. His colors are yellow and orange. His day is Wednesday. Its element is earth. It is associated with St. Catherine, St. Joan of Arc and Santa Marta.

Yemanja - is the Orisha of family harmony, the queen of the seas and the mother of the orishas. Their colors are blue and white or light green. His day is Friday. Its element is water. Hopefully - he is considered the father of all deities. It is the oldest and the first to be created. It is responsible for creating the world and human beings. It is the deity of agriculture, which brings rain and fertile fields. It is associated with justice and balance. It is associated with Jesus and worshiped in the following ways: Oxalufã (Hopefully Old), deity of peace, dressed in white and his day is Friday. Oxaguiã (Would Younger), brave and warrior deity, considered son of Oxalufã. Dressed in white and your day is also Friday
