In the period of Brazilian colonization, more than four million
Africans crossed the Atlantic. From different regions of Africa, they
were separated from their fellow nations and divided into slave
quarters, to avoid riots.
This resulted in a mixture of people and customs, which were
concentrated in different ways in different locations in Brazil as
slaves had their own dances, songs, saints and parties.
Gradually they were mixing the Catholic rites present with elements of
African cults, and associating their deities with the saints in an
attempt to rescue the atmosphere of its past and to circumvent the
prohibition to exercise their religion.
The practices of that time just driving the formation of cult religions
today, as Candomble and Umbanda, with strong penetration in Bahia, Rio
de Janeiro, São Paulo and Rio Grande do Sul.
